EXTRACTING FEATURES FROM FACE REGIONS AND AUXILIARY IDENTIFICATION REGIONS OF IMAGES FOR PERSON RECOGNITION AND OTHER APPLICATIONS

Method, apparatus, and systems for extracting features from face regions (47) and auxiliary identification regions (49, 51) of images (20) are described. In one aspect, a face region (47) containing at least a portion of a person's face is detected in an input image (20). An auxiliary identification region (49, 51) outside the face region (47) is identified in the input image (20). Facial features characterizing the face region (20) are determined. Auxiliary identification features characterizing the auxiliary identification region (49, 51) are calculated. An indexing datum (22) is derived from the facial features and the auxiliary identification features. The indexing datum (22) is stored in association with the input image (20).
