The invention relates to an RNA polymerase I transcription factor TIF-IA and related proteins the concentration and/or activity of which is correlated with the cell proliferation rate, and to DNA sequences encoding said proteins. The invention also relates to ligands and antagonists binding to RNA polymerase I transcription factor TIF-IA or related proteins, and to antisense RNAs or ribozymes directed against the expression of TIF-IA. The inventive compounds are useful in the prophylaxis or treatment of diseases that are related to an increased or a reduced cell proliferation.
