[PROBLEMS] To provide an electrolyte for a proton conductive film for a fuel cell, in which any ion exchange group removal reaction is not caused by a parent electron substitution reaction occurring accompanied by proton attack during using the proton conductive film. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] Disclosed is a chemically modified fullerene for an electrolyte for a proton conductive film, to which a sulfonate group SO3M and/or a phosphonate group PO(OM)2 [wherein M represents H or an alkali metal ion] is bound directly and substantially no organic compound is bound. Also disclosed is a process for producing the chemically modified fullerene, which is characterized by using a specific reaction solvent of (diemthylacetamide + water) when a sulfonation reagent K2SO3 is used or dioxane when a phosphonation reagent LiPO(OEt)2 is used.
