The invention relates to a new method for improving mechanical and tribological properties of thermoplastic technical polymers containing oxygen and/or halogen heteroatoms and of devices and accessories made therefrom by treating their surfaces with accelerated atom beams. According to the invention the surface treatment is performed with accelerated beams of electrostatically neutral particles obtained from noble gases, inert permanent gases or combinations thereof as work gases at an energy range between 0.5 keV and 50 keV and at a fluence range between 1012 cm-2 and 1018 cm-2 of the applied particles.
