The invention relates to a method for calibrating the flow/opening characteristics of an electrically controllable, analogue regulating hydraulic valve, in particular an inlet valve (3), in a motor vehicle brake or regulating system, such as ABS, ASR, ESP etc. According to the invention, pressure means are guided by means of a separating valve (2) and the inlet valve (3), which is to be calibrated, to the wheel brake (A) and is guided back by means of an outlet valve (4) and an electrically operated and electrically controllable hydraulic pump (5). The following steps are used in order to carry out the calibrating process: a) the separation valve (2) and the inlet valve (3), which is to be calibrated, are blocked b) a defined pressure difference is established over the inlet valve (3) which is to be calibrated by controlling the hydraulic pump (5), c) the inlet valve (3) which is to be calibrated is controlled by means of a valve opening signal in the form of a predetermined valve opening flow (I1, I2, I3, I4, I5) of a predefined duration (Tpulse), d) the volume of the pressure means flowing into the wheel brake (A) is determined due to the valve opening signal, by controlling the hydraulic pump (5) and returning the pressure means volume from the wheel brake (A) in the brake circuit and e) the through flow opening of the inlet valve (3) which is to be calibrated is determined according to the respective valve opening signal, by determining and evaluating the pressure means volume which are guided back. The steps a) to e) are repeated in a practical manner in successive measuring routines, with identical or modified valve opening signals.
