The RAM has a single port static memory for storing refresh information specific to a group of memory cells from a set of groups of memory cells, where the refresh information has a current refresh period, a time remaining before refresh, a read access indication and a write access indication. The single port static memory manages the refresh information for each group of memory cells independently of the other groups. A logic circuit updates the indications depending on whether the associated group of cells is read/write accessed during the period. An independent claim is also included for a method for refreshing a dynamic RAM.
