The invention discloses a method and a device for recording processes at a solid-liquid interface and relates to surface sensors based on surface waveguide electromagnetic waves excited at a solid-liquid interface. The inventive method consists in forming at least a part of a given solid body, near the solid-liquid interface, from layers having periodically modifiable refractive indexes, i.e. a photonic crystal is used in the form of a solid body, the thickness of the layers being selected in such a way that a given electromagnetic emission excites more than one surface waveguide modes at said liquid- photonic crystal interface, and in simultaneously recording two or more surface waveguide modes having different depths of the electromagnetic wave penetration into a liquid volume, thereby making it possible to separate surface and volume effects from each other. Said invention makes it possible to separate surface and volume signals from each other, thereby reducing the volume noise effects and increasing sensitivity.
