The invention relates to a method for regulating charging of power supply units comprising removable nickel cadmium or nickel metal hydride batteries with optionally constant or inconstant power sources as well as a universal, inexpensive power supply unit operated according to said method. Such units make it possible to internally charge batteries and especially also charge or operate external small mobile devices, the internal batteries being used as buffers in the second instance. According to the invention, -?U switching-off, balancing, and W charging are performed in a modified form, alternatively or in a special sequence, thus allowing batteries having an initially unknown capacity to be defined and be fully charged by means of inconstant power sources, e.g. solar generators while the charge status is accurately displayed. Furthermore, the internal batteries can be discharged for operating external devices in the modes of operation balancing and W charging. An inventive power supply unit (1) comprises control electronics (5), an integrated solar generator (2), batteries (4), an input (3) for external power sources, and an output (6) for external consumers.
