The method involves estimating determined parameters e.g. value of mass of fuel, injected in a combustion chamber of each of cylinders (1a-1d), value of mass of air mixture and exhaust gas recirculation at an intake pipe (310) of a thermal engine (3), and temperature of the mixture, and magnitude of combustion phasing in a combustion cycle. Thermal flux applied to a component e.g. piston or actuator, of the thermal engine is controlled in a closed loop, from the derived magnitude of the estimated characteristic parameters.
