The invention relates in general to an assembly (1) of at least a first sheet metal element (7) on a main sheet metal element (2), in which assembly the said sheet metal elements (7, 2) are firmly held together and positioned with reference to one another through the collaboration of their respective rebates (3, 8), the outer edges (4, 16) of which are able to accept a seal. The invention is essentially characterized in that at least part (18) of the outer edge (16) of the rebate (8) of the first sheet metal element (7) is chamfered so as not to protrude beyond the outer edge (4) of the rebate (3) of the main sheet metal element (2). The invention also relates to the application of such an assembly to the production of a surround for a moving part of a motor vehicle and to a motor vehicle equipped with such an assembly and to a method of producing at least one sheet metal element of this assembly.
