A power steering pump equipped with a cover plate for improving passages and a method of assembling the power steering pump are provided to minimize the vibration and noise generated by operation of the steering pump by disposing a balance passage below second low pressure units to supply operation oil entering a suction chamber equally to two second low pressure units, and to conveniently assemble the steering pump by fixing a pump cartridge and a lateral plate to the cover plate by using fitting pins into fitting holes disposed on the cover plate. A power steering pump equipped with a cover plate for improving passages includes a cam ring(30), a body(1) supporting a driving shaft(50) and embedding the cam ring, and a lateral plate(8) installed between the body and the cam ring. A suction chamber(10) is communicated with a low pressured passage(9) which introduces the operation oil from the outside. A branch path has two branches. The branch path is a void disposed on an upper semicircle area between an inner circumference of the body and an outer circumference of the cam ring. The branch path is communicated with a low pressure port of the lateral plate and the suction chamber. A cover plate(2) has a section coupling to an opening section of the body, and at the same time contacts with one section of the cam ring. A recessed first low pressure unit(20) is disposed on a position corresponding to the suction chamber. Recessed second low pressure units(20') are connected to branch grooves(6) disposed on two sides of the first low pressure unit. A balance passage allows the two second low pressure units to be communicated downward. A method of assembling the power steering pump comprises the steps of: assembling parts such as a flow control valve(4) to a body, and installing the driving shaft having a pulley into a shaft port by using a bearing; force fitting pins into fitting holes disposed on the cover plate to position the cover plate, a pump cartridge(3), and the lateral plate to predetermined positions; installing the pump cartridge to the cover plate; installing the lateral plate by fitting the pins into fitting holes disposed on one section of the pump cartridge; and coupling the cover plate, which has the pump cartridge and the lateral plate assembled, to the body by using bolts.
