A functionalized silica nanoparticle and a method for preparing the same are provided to show reduced agglutination and non-specific linkage of nanoparticles. A functionalized silica nanoparticle comprises a silica nanoparticle and an amine group linked to a surface of the silica nanoparticle, wherein polyethylene glycol(PEG) is linked to the amine group. Additionally, folate is linked to the PEG of the silica nanoparticle. The functionalized silica nanoparticle is prepared by a method comprising the steps of: i) synthesizing a conventional dye-nanoparticle by reverse microemulsion process; ii) surface-treating the nanoparticle with an amine group; iii) introducing PEG to the amine group; and optionally iv) linking the folate thereto.
