A graded hybrid amorphous silicon nano-wire solar cell is provided to reduce surface and interface defects by using a transformation method which dopes nano-size material. A photocell element(100) includes a plurality of elongated semiconductor nano-structures(101) and an amorphous layer(103) of semiconductor material. The plurality of elongated semiconductor nano-structures are disposed on a substrate and have a first type doping. The amorphous layer of semiconductor material is disposed on the elongated semiconductor nano-structure as a conformal. The amorphous layer of semiconductor material has an interface between the amorphous layer and the elongated semiconductor nano-structure. The amorphous layer has a composition distribution that it is substantially intrinsic at the interface and is substantially conductive at an opposite surface of the amorphous layer.
