A face outline detection method using a gradual AAM(Active Appearance Model) is provided to improve a detection rate as being robust against a pose, a lighting and a face background. A face outline detection process comprises the following steps. From a model input image, a face region is detected. The detected face region is normalized. Fitting with a face inner AAM is performed. Through a relation matrix, an initial value for the entire face AAM parameter vector is estimated. By using the estimated initial value and performing entire face AAM fitting, the entire face outline is detected.
