A hyaluronic acid having a molecular weight of less than 100,000 is provided to be easily absorbed into human body and be effective for improving skin wrinkles, enhancing moisturizing capability, promoting elasticity and skin peeling, thereby being usefully used as a pharmaceutical composition or a health functional food for improving the skin. A pharmaceutical composition or a health functional food for improving skin wrinkles and skin peeling comprises hyaluronic acid having a low molecular weight of 1,000-100,000 daltons, wherein the hyaluronic acid is prepared by adding acid to hyaluronic acid with a high molecular weight of 500,000-2,000,000 daltons isolated from a culture broth of microorganism and then subjecting it to repetitive precipitation using an organic solvent. Further, the health functional food made from the hyaluronic acid may be a form of tablet, capsule, pill or liquid.
