An apparatus and a method for recognizing a marker by taking the change of illumination and the interaction of a leaner into consideration are provided to divide the internal area of a marker into a small number of sections to avoid inter marker confusion, thereby improving the recognition performance of the marker. A flip correction module(111) determines the flip state of an input image and corrects the flip of the image. A frame index determining module(112) checks the frame index of the corrected image to determine if the frame index represents the first frame. A marker recognition module(113) recognizes a marker by using the information of a present input frame if the corrected image is the first frame. The marker recognition module(113) performs an adaptive binarization scheme to perform marker recognition based on the change of illumination, history-based information, and the arrangement structure of a marker if the corrected image is not the first frame.
