APPARATUS AND METHOD OF WAN ACCELERATION THROUGH IMPROVING TCP PERFORMANCE

A WAN(Wide Area Network) accelerator and a WAN acceleration method through the enhancement of TCP performance are provided to improve the data transmission speed between two hosts, efficiently use a memory, and maintain optimized data transmission by dynamically adjusting the sizes of TCP data Tx/Rx buffers. A WAN accelerator(100), which connects the first host with the second host through a WAN section, comprises a compression/decompression part(101), a LAN connection part(103), a WAN connection part(102), a TCP data Tx buffer(104), a TCP data Rx buffer(105) and a buffer size adjustment part(106). The compression/decompression part compresses Tx IP packets, and decompresses Rx IP packets. The LAN connection part, connected to the first host, receives Tx IP packets from the first host or transmits Rx IP packets to the first host. The WAN connection part, connected to the WAN section, transmits Tx IP packets to the second host or receives Rx IP packets from the second host. The TCP data Tx/Rx buffers are created by a TCP connection including a proxy TCP connection which is made by snatching a TCP connection from the first or second host. The buffer size adjustment part adjusts the sizes of the TCP data Tx/Rx buffers in accordance with the size of a TCP congestion window.
