The external cavity laser apparatus and method that is independent of the wavelength or channel selection is performed from the adjustment of the external cavity optical path length is disclosed. The device comprises a channel or wavelength selector tuner and an external cavity tuner, and wavelength tuner is not connected from the external cavity tuner. Tuning means for selecting a wavelength and the cavity optical path lengths are configured to operate independently or orthogonal to one another. Wavelength tuner may operate in accordance with the first, the channel selection signals, a common tuner operates according to the second, the external cavity adjusted signal. Wavelength tuner and an external cavity tuner may operate under the control of the same or a separate controller. Channel selection signals can be derived from a look-up table of the adjusted parameter data access by the controller, the external cavity adjusted signal may be derived from the error signal from the detector configured to measure the external cavity losses.
