A method for informing connection errors based on a cause of error using a set top box and a set top box having a function of informing connection errors based on a cause of error are provided to supply different error informing images according to types of the connection errors when the connection error is generated between a VOD(Video On Demand) sever and the set top box of a user in a VOD service using an IPTV(Internet Protocol Television) network, thereby enabling the user to easily identifying the cause of the connection error. In a method for informing connection errors based on a cause of error using a set top box, the method comprises the following steps of: determining whether connection between the set top box and a VOD server is good or not(S300); if not so and a cause of a connection error is a network error, displaying a network error informing message on a display device(S400,S700); if the cause is Internet network error, displaying an Internet network error informing image in the display device(S500,S800); and if the cause if a server error, extracting a server error informing image from the set top box and displaying the extracted image(S900).
