PURPOSE: A device for deciding a rank of a sample, an apparatus for deciding ranks of plural samples, and the ith rank order filter are provided to decide the rank of a particular sample value of digital sample values and the ranks of each sample value in a given set by integrating plural rank-decision devices. CONSTITUTION: A device for deciding a rank of one sample value of plural sample values includes an adder(24), the first type comparator(18), and the second type comparator(20). The adder has an output portion to indicate a particular sample value of plural sample values. The first type comparator has the second input portion for receiving one sample value of the sample values and the first input portion for receiving the other sample value of the sample values in order to provided an output signal for indicating logic 1 or logic 0 when one sample value is less than the particular sample value, or not. The second type comparator has the second input portion for receiving one sample value of the sample values and the first input portion for receiving the other sample value of the sample values in order to provided an output signal for indicating logic 1 or logic 0 when one sample value is less than the particular sample value, or not. The adder outputs a result for indicating a rank of the particular sample value of the sample values by adding the output signal of the first type comparator to the output signal of the second type comparator.
