Production of carbon allotropes and their intercalation or endohedral compounds comprises igniting a mixture of a carbon-fluorine compound (I) and a halophilic metal (II) at a flame temperature above 3000 K in an inert gas atmosphere. Production of carbon allotropes and their intercalation or endohedral compounds comprises igniting a mixture of a carbon-fluorine compound (I) and a halophilic metal (II) at a flame temperature above 3000 K in an inert gas atmosphere at atmospheric pressure or below such that the area-based reaction rate is less than 100 g/sec.cm2, where: (I) comprises ionically and/or covalently bonded fluorine and a 5-, 6- and/or 7-membered carbon framework, where these frameworks (verb missing) of two or more condensed rings or are bound together via aliphatic and/or olefinic (i.e. double and/or triple bonds) bridges; and (II) is selected from lithium, sodium, beryllium, magnesium, cesium, strontium, barium, scandium, yttrium, lanthanum, cerium, titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, biobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, silver, zinc, cadmium, boron, aluminum, gallium, indium, thallium, silicon, germanium, tin, lead, antimony, bismuth and their mixtures and alloys.
