The method involves determination of dynamic storage capacity by means of time lapse of voltage signal from lambda probe (4), which is arranged downstream to the exhaust gas catalytic converter (3). The lambda probe ascertains maximum speed for entry or discharge of oxygen into oxygen accumulator (6), from which dynamic storage capacity of oxygen accumulator of exhaust gas catalytic converter is determined.
