The monitor (1) has a display unit (6) and a signal input (3) for connection to a computer (2). An integrated display screen saver is activated after a predetermined time. A control unit (7) is designed to interrupt a video signal received by the signal input, so that the display unit is switched on and off for a short time period and the video signal is transmitted to the display unit. The monitor outputs an optical or acoustic warning during activation of the screen saver. The control unit is connected with a signal source (8). An independent claim is also included for a method for protecting a display unit of a monitor.
