The sensor has a layer on a substrate and electrodes, where the layer is made of two coatings of titanium dioxide. The electrodes are arranged on one coating that forms a sensor surface and faces an expansion space for measuring electrical resistance of the layer as a measure for gas e.g. ammonia, concentration. One coating has catalytically effective nano-particles within the region of the grain boundaries, and the other coating has alkaline-metal ions on intercalation-places and is directly arranged under the former coating, so that the layer is formed as a heterostructure. An independent claim is also included for a method of manufacturing a sensor for measuring reducing gases, in particular of hydrogen by coating a substrate with a sol-gel-process.
