A paper strip (6) for a tachograph (1) has a series of markings (17, 18) extending transversely to its direction of movement in the tachograph (1). The markings (17, 18) have different lengths and are scanned by a sensor (10, 11). The sensor (10, 11) generates a signal sequence which provides information about an offset of the paper strip (6) in the printing unit (7). A control device (12) controls a printing unit (7) of the tachograph (1) and compensates for the offset.
