The self-energizing brake is fitted with an emergency release system. This comprises a cam disk (8) with a notched edge (15). In the operating position the lower edges of the notches rest on ball bearings (9) and the cam disk revolves on a lower disk (10). When the power is shut off the cam disk falls so that the ball bearings fit into the notches and the brake is released.
