The method involves determining difference values for a variable influencing acceleration of a vehicle (1a), which is driven by an internal-combustion engine (2) such as diesel engine, independent of an acceleration difference. A current value of the variable influencing acceleration is determined. An actual drive input, which describes a desired value of the variable is detected. A new value for the variable is formed as a difference of the current value and the difference value, when the desired value is larger than the current value. The engine is operated independent of the new value. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a controller in a vehicle driven by an internal-combustion engine (2) a computer program, which is implemented on a computing device.
