The device has an acoustic sensor (30) e.g. solid-borne sound sensor, attached to a convertible folding top (12) for receiving vibrations of the folding top. A comparing unit compares the vibrations received by the acoustic sensor, by comparing a spectrum, resulted from the received vibrations, with a reference spectrum. An influencing unit influences the operation of the folding top based on the result of the comparison. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for operating a convertible folding top (2) a computer program with a program code executable by a computer for performing a method of operating a convertible folding top (3) a computer program product, in particular storage medium, with a computer program for performing a method of operating a convertible folding top.
