The method involves detecting an image data of a coupling area by using image sensors, which are arranged at a motor vehicle. Symmetrical characteristics of a trailer (1) are segmented in the detected image data. An optical mark (3), which is arranged at the trailer, is detected, where a relative position between the motor vehicle and the trailer is determined based on the detected optical mark. The adjustment of a towing bar (2) and/or the trailer is determined based on the segmented symmetrical characteristics of the trailer. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for image-supported coupling of a motor vehicle to a trailer (2) an optical mark for image-supported coupling of a motor vehicle to a trailer.
