The bed construction (10) has a mattress frame, an upper bed frame (14) connected with the mattress frame, and a lower support frame (16) provided with legs below the bed frame. A raising and lowering mechanism (11) is attached between the support frame and the bed frame to raise and lower lateral sides of the bed frame. A locking system is provided for fixing the unlifted lateral sides, which act as a hinge. The locking system is driven by an electric motor and actuated by an electric linear drive or an electric centering actuator. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for lateral tilting of a bed (2) a method for changing the available bed into a desired bed construction.
