The device for positioning a tool in relation to a workpiece (2), or workpiece in relation to a tool, has a first and a second pivot axis, wherein an angle between the two pivot axes and an angle between the second pivot axis and a principal direction of a connecting element which is pivotable around the second axis is at most 40 degrees. The two angles (11,12) are most preferably no more than 10 degrees. The principal direction of the connecting element (6) is a further pivot axis (10). An independent claim is included for an adapter for the connection of a tool to a linear guide of a machine tool.
