The controller has an adjustable winding or unwinding device, and a pneumatic thread tension regulator with a channel (1). A loop (3) of threads is tightened in the channel by air flowing perpendicular to thread. Sensors e.g. difference pressure sensor (8), are provided for measuring depth of projection of the thread loop into the channel. The winding or unwinding device is controlled using signals of the sensors, so that the thread loop remains within the channel in a defined region. Two channel walls that are opposite to one another have a distance corresponding to a diameter of the thread.
