Catalytic gas generator operated using steam, natural gas and electrical current, producing nitrogen and oxygen, employs layered-body ionic conductor electrode assembly built into gas generator vessel
A layered-body ionic conductor electrode assembly (ICE-A) is built into the gas generator vessel. It comprises an anode electrode (24), an oxygen ion conductor (22) and a cathode electrode (23). The ICE-A divides the interior of the vessel into an anode chamber (36), a cathode chamber (30) and a reactor vessel (33). The oxygen ion conductor surrounds the reactor vessel. The inlet for supply of steam (35) into the anode chamber, the inlet for the supply of steam into the cathode chamber (29), and the inlet for supply of natural gas (32), are all included in the reactor vessel. The natural gas inlet is a lance which projects through the cathode chamber. The vessel also includes an outlet removing hydrogen (37) produced by electrolysis, from the anode chamber. A common outlet removes oxygen and steam mixture (34) from the cathode chamber. In addition a mixture comprising reformate and steam, is also removed from the reactor vessel. The reactor vessel inlet is connected to the outlet of the cathode chamber, the cathode chamber being sealed-off with the end of the cathode electrode. At the end of the cathode electrode, the reactor vessel starts. Penetrations in the vessel, lead-through electrical connections. These join the current source to the anode- and cathode electrodes. Further practical details of construction and specific materials of construction are elaborated. Notable features include incorporation of a micro-turbine stage. A shift reformer also included, produces hydrogen and carbon dioxide from the carbon monoxide in the reformate and steam. Energy required to start the reforming process is supplied by induction- and microwaves. The gas generator is incorporated into a plant generating nitrogen and synthesis gas, which also includes the shift reformer, a combustion chamber, heat exchanger, steam turbine and generator, two condensers and a steam generator. An independent claim IS INCLUDED FOR the method of operating the gas generator.
