The sensor has an optical sensor (2) that is arranged in a headlight (1A) of a vehicle and detects a laterally lying area of a vehicle environment. An optical axis of the optical sensor is aligned parallel to an optical axis of the headlight. A deflection device is in effective connection with the optical sensor and enables the detection of the laterally lying area of the vehicle environment by beam deflection. The deflection device includes a lens (4) and a reflector (5) that are arranged in an optical path of the optical sensor.
