The method involves dividing a sensor signal into a high frequency portion and a low frequency portion, and determining the speed of a particle e.g. solid particle, from the high frequency portion of the sensor signal. The position of a main maximum and two auxiliary maxima are determined from the low frequency portion. The transit time of the particle is determined from the temporal distance of both auxiliary maxima or the double temporal distance of the main maximum and an auxiliary maximum by the measuring volume. The speed and the size of the particle are computed from the transit time.
