The method involves determining a sensor measured value for distance measuring sensors (S1-S4) for an object e.g. body part e.g. finger (4), at a well-known place. A straight line gradient for each of the distance measuring sensors is computed based on the appropriate sensor measured value. A distance of the corresponding distance measuring sensor from the well-known place and a minimum distance sensor measured value are determined. The minimum distance sensor measured value is detected during a minimum distance of the object from the appropriate distance measuring sensor. An independent claim is also included for a device with a position-sensitive, contactlessly measuring sensor arrangement for determining a position of an object in a motor vehicle.
