The bus system has multiple series built-in units (10) as bus subscriber, between which a communication is enabled by electrical light signals (38). The series built-in units have couple-in devices (28). The couple-in devices are arranged in a assembly condition of the series built-in units, such that the communication is enabled by a single light beam overlapping all series built-in units. The light beam passes through every couple-in device, and diverts from each couple-in device of a part to a respective receiver (34). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a series built-in unit (2) a method for exchanging signals between bus subscribers.
