The device (10) has an encoder for changing magnetic field, during adjustment of a movable valve piston (16). A sensor (28) such as magneto resistive sensor, responds to the change in the magnetic field, and the encoder is formed by an end section (18) of the valve piston. The valve piston has an encoder comprising two features, and the sensor has two sensor units arranged in a common housing. Each feature of the latter encoder is assigned to the sensor unit.
