The method involves continuously detecting forces (F8a, F8b) occurring in a left tie rod (8a) and in a right tie rod (8b) of a guidable axle (1a) of a motor vehicle, and comparing the forces with one another. A track misalignment of the motor vehicle is recognized when the forces differentiate around a preset threshold value from each other at a preset period of time in magnitude and/or direction. The recognition of the track misalignment takes place during straight driving of the motor vehicle. The recognized misaligment is compensated automatically by an electronic servo steering system (1). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising a set of instructions to perform a method for operating an electronic servo steering system (2) a computer program product comprising a set of instructions to perform a method for operating the electronic servo steering system (3) an electronic servo steering system of a motor vehicle, comprising a steering handle.
