The method involves sectionally coating a sensor element (14) by using a shrinking foil, and exposing the coated sensor element to a heating process, where the shrinking foil shrinks at temperatures below a sinter temperature of ceramics. The heating process of the coated sensor element is accomplished in such a way that the heating process clinges the shrink foil by shrinkage at the sensor element. The shrinking foil is applied on the sintered sensor element. An independent claim is also included for a gas sensor for measuring physical characteristic of exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine.
