A gel-like base preparation (I) comprises (a) a basic component, (b) up to 3 wt. % of a gel former containing (i) at least two of agar, carrageenan, locust bean flour, guar flour, starch (or derivatives), cellulose (or derivatives), alginic acid and alginates and (ii) xanthan gum and/or silicic acid and (c) at least one essential oil. Independent claims are included for: (1) the production of a gel-like base preparation (I'), by mixing an oxidation state stabilizer with trace element salt(s) or a solution or suspension of mineral salts; heating before, during or after increasing the pH of the mixture by addition of a basic component (a); optionally adding further trace element salts; adding a gel forming mixture (i)/(ii) as in (b); cooling; and adding an essential oil (c) (optionally mixed with an emulsifier); (2) the base preparation (I') obtained by the process; and (3) the use of the gel forming mixture (i)/(ii) as in (b) for producing a gel-like base preparation.
