The method involves detecting the time period of occurrence of a pre-defined bit pattern in a transmit data stream of a signal to be transmitted from a side (A) to a side (B) of a digital transmission system (1). The time period of occurrence of the bit pattern is detected in receive data stream of the signals received at the side (B). The periods are transmitted to the respective another side, and latency period for the transmission of the signals from the side (A) to the side (B) is determined at one or both sides from the time periods by the formation of the difference. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for realizing a mechanism for determining the latency period of a digital system (2) a mechanism for determining the latency period of a digital transmission system.
