The illuminant (1) has a multiple optical fibers (5), which are coupled with a light source. The surface of the optical fibers is designed so that more than 50 percent of the scattered light is emitted over the lateral surface of the fibers, particularly more than 90 percent. The surface of the optical fibers is partially roughed up. An independent claim is also included for a method for the manufacturing of an illuminant.
