The surge tank has an inlet aperture (6) attached for the torch gas in a lower part of a container case (5) of a closed container (1). The base (11) of the open container (10) lies within the horizontal plane including the maxima of the inlet aperture. The case of the open container protrudes from below into the hollow cylinder shape annular gap existing between a pipe section (7) and the case of the closed container. Two heat conducting pipe coils (17,18) are fixed on the outer side of the base of the closed container. The inlet of the former pipe coil is connected with the downpipe fixed in the base of the open container and the outlet is connected with the riser open in the open container for the circulation of the water. The other pipe coil is subjected with saturated low pressure water vapor. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a surge tank.
