The tank (2) has a filling space (6) sealingly enclosed by a container wall (4). A surge absorption device (8) is arranged in the filling space. A varying unit (10) e.g. flexible elastic plastic balloon, is liquid and/or gas-tight attached to an inner contour of the container wall in a region of an empty space (22) and varies a variable volume (12) of the surge absorption device. A valve (16) pressurizes or fills the variable volume with air. A delivery unit (18) e.g. electrical air pump, is arranged at an upper side of the tank. An independent claim is also included for a method for absorbing surges in a liquid tank of a motor vehicle.
