The method involves scanning a sensor signal (1) in a periodic or random sequence, and completely exchanging entire measure volumes between two samplings. Number of samplings is counted, and particles at measure volumes with the number of samplings are detected. Detection probability of the particle is formed based on a ratio of the number of samplings with which the particles are detected. Number concentration of the particles in the fluid is determined by a calibration factor or calibration function.
