The method involves cleaning a rear side (7) of a grip unit (2), and setting the grip unit with the rear side on spacer units, so that the rear side is completely moistened by a liquid plastic. The liquid plastic is hardened. The plastic with the grip unit is removed from a container. The grip unit is cut along a grip outline from the plastic, so that a flexible layer (8) remains durably at the grip unit. A through-hole (5) is refinished by the flexible layer, where the plastic consists of polyurethane. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a container for implementing a method for retrofitting a grip unit (2) a climbing grip.
