The method involves monitoring a hot exhaust gas so that its temperature is above the reaction temperature of a catalytic converter. The catalyst (1) is connected to a cooler exhaust, so that an ongoing cooling effect (3) takes place. An axial position (P) of the cooling effect is calculated within the catalyst. From the signal of the catalyst a determination is made downstream for the exhaust probe relative to the axial position (P) of the cooling effect and determined value stored (2).
