The method involves recording measured values for a process variable at a preset time point, and combining temporal sequential recorded measured values to a weighted measured value. A discrete measured value is assigned to each weighted measured value, and a future temporal process of the process variable is measured by a linear regression of the discrete measured value. A time point, at which the process variable reaches a preset limiting value, is computed. Each weighted measured value is assigned to the same discrete measured value, where the measured value lies in a preset tolerance band.
