The method involves detecting electromagnetic radiation (13) using a sensor (7) in a wavelength range of 400 to 750 nanometer. The electromagnetic radiation is detected using another sensor (9) in another wavelength range of 750 to 1100 nanometer. Signals of the sensors are provided to a controller (11), where the signals correspond to intensities of the radiation in the respective ranges. Headlamps (3, 5) of a motor vehicle are switched-on by the controller based on the respective signals, when the intensities lie below respective threshold values. An independent claim is also included for a system for controlling a headlamp of a motor vehicle.
